A new type of highly sensitive graphene-based chemical sensor has been designed and fabricated for the detection of HIV virus in human blood with excellent selectivity and efficiency. By loading with PEG-modified dendritic silica nanosphere, the resultant sensing materials were fabricated via an easy and scalable process, in which graphene was grown on dendritic silica with the help of hydrazine. These sensing materials showed good sensitivity and selectivity to the target HIV viruses by measuring changes in the electrical conductivity. The results indicated that the relative conductance increased linearly with the concentration of HIV virus and could even be used to detect single HIV virus. The feasibility of this sensor in clinical detection of HIV virus has been verified by testing HIV-infected blood samples. Moreover, this work may open a new way to develop the electrochemical biosensors for ultrasensitive and selective detection of other relevant disease-associated biomolecules.RICHMOND, Va.
